Instrumental Conducting
Overview
SIUE’s Master of Music with a specialization in instrumental conducting prepares musicians to expand their expertise in conducting instrumental ensembles through advanced score study, gestural technique, and intensive podium experience. Students develop rehearsal strategies, musical interpretation skills, leadership abilities, and artistic integrity while learning to communicate effectively through expressive conducting techniques. Graduates are prepared for professional ensemble direction, doctoral study, or collegiate teaching.
Graduates pursue careers such as:
- Regional and professional symphony conductors
- Educators at two- and four-year colleges
- Secondary educators who need advanced conducting skills
Competition in music remains strong, but employment is projected to grow eight percent over the next decade. Versatile musicians skilled in multiple styles and instructional settings will have the strongest opportunities.
